Did anyone manage to get the built in mic working in Ubuntu?

Hi! I've been trying for days to get the built in mic working with Ubuntu so I can use skype but no success. Did anyone manage to get this working? What's the secret?

I've gotten about halfway there. The important thing is to realize that the sound system has two microphone inputs, the microphone itself, and the microphone input plug. They are separate channels of input, so you need to enable the one you want in the mixer.

That said, I've gotten the microphone to work - since I can get it to pick up sound from the microphone, and output it to the speaker. But I still haven't gotten
Skype to select the microphone as its audio input source.

For sure, audio setup in Ubuntu needs some work.

Update: I just spent some more time on this... and tried the tips on setting up Pulse Audio found in another thread here, still can't get it to work.

Right now sound in ubuntu is a fugly mess for all computers. They are switching from the various sound managers which are archaic standards in linux to pulseaudio... an incredibly painful arduous process, and we are all along for the ride.

Your best bet is to go through the instructions in this thread in the ubuntu forums:

Well, i'm using Kubuntu 8.10 and the built-in Mic works out of the box.
Anyway you have to "activate" it in the alsamixer, that's all...

To help those of us who use other distributions, can you post the module configuration options found in modprobe.conf that make the microphone work?

kalel: well, i didnt get the internal mic working in skype also.
an external one works fine.
