'Essential' XP apps for your Lenovo S10

Postby tsy » Wed Nov 19, 2008 9:56 pm

Here is my list:

CCLeaner (keeps system lean and nimble)
Avast antivirus (small fast and effective)
MS office 2003
Spybot
Opera 9.6 (great widgets and FAST)
Rocket Dock
7Zip (smaller and better than winzip_
VLC (best open source media player)
Thunderbird (email client)
Dexpot (multiple desktops)
Foxit PDF reader - much faster and wayy smaller than Adobe!

It will be nice to know what other s10 fans use on this little gem of a PC!

I'm pretty conservative so far in what I install, but this is what I've added so far.

ThinkFree Mobile Netbook edition, an MS Office alternative
Skype (latest version)
Windows Live (Mail and Messenger, the former should replace Outlook Express shouldn't it since I have a Hotmail account). I updated Windows of course.

If ever I need to do photoshopping away from the desktop, I'll install either Photoshop Elements 1.0 or 2.0 (I have both), but the 600 vertical resolution limits it and it would be more useful on a second display. I'd use Thunderbird but since my desktop uses Eudora, I'd wait for a stable version of Eudora/Penelope. I've also got Norton Confidential but haven't installed it anywhere yet.

The best Anti-Malware software I've found is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It removed malware that SpyBot and Ad-Aware didn't & couldn't. And it was a nasty one that took over the desktop background replaced it with text that said you had a virus, and it blocked internet access to popular anti-virus websites.

My list is pretty minimal as well.

+ Opera 9 with a minimalist skin applied
+ MS Office 2000 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
+ WinRAR (got in on the free registration promotion while back, great app!)
+ MS Reader (gotta have my e-books)
+ Acrobat Reader 9
+ Adobe Lightroom 2
+ Media Player Classic: Home Cinema Edition w/CoreAVC for the occasional 720p vid

- no anti-virus or -spyware, since using Opera I've never had a web-based infection and don't plan on installing anything un-tested
- no chat programs, finally got my GF to get off that time-wasting kick! keeping up on emails is bad enough...

Wow! Adobe Lightroom? Thought that it would be a bit too much for the S10 to handle!

I use TED (Television Episode Dowloader) and uTorrent to effectively create a DVR on my S10. Great for travelling. I always have my favorite shows with me!

I went and gorged myself on a bunch of programs from here:

and put them on my flash-drive so I can work between computers. Some highlights:

Portable Firefox: http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=132

I finally added Photoshop Elements 1.0 and it is fast, since it only requires 64MB RAM. Since I work mostly in RGB color space the lack of CMYK color space (which is converted to RGB) is not an issue for me. I still have Photoshop 7.01 on my desktop for that purpose.
Plants vs. Zombies on the S10 is such a fun stress-buster.
