Solved: HDD swap and preserving OKR

After much trouble and hair-pulling I have finally made a solution for repairing the OneKey Recovery Button and partition (think old-school IBM HPA guys and gals)! This utility will allow you to create a bootable USB key, once the key is created just insert it into your ideapad and boot from it (Power-on, press F12 and select USB key). After it boots into DOS just type "setup" and press enter. After the update completes shutdown the system, remove the USB key and enjoy your OneKey Recovery button again

A few notes:

1) For this tool to work correctly you must have the original recovery partition on your drive (can be ghost copy for those that installed an upgrade drive and copied all partitions to their new drive).

2) If you have your recovery partition id set to anything other than "12" please change it back to "12" otherwise the button will not work. You can use many tools to do this, but the most popular (and free) is "PTEDIT32.EXE", just Google it to find a copy.

3) I have also included a tool to delete the OneKey Recovery partition and the HPA data (USE WITH CAUTION!). To delete the OneKey Recovery partition just type "delete" and press enter.

4) I take no responsibility for any data loss or damage that may occur while using this utility.

5) You may pass this utility to anyone that you wish, however you MUST provide it as freeware and not charge a fee of any kind! I don't want anyone profiting in any way from this utility or its use.

I tried your utility and I am running into some trouble. I created the disk as you stated. I then boot from it and get put into a C: prompt at that point I type "setup" : response Bad command or filename - "setup". I then do a "dir" and see there is no setup but "hsetup" , "msetup" and a few combobulated fornts for the directory. What am i doing wrong?

Never mind I got it to work. You are the best!!! This is an AMAZING little program. You are the man!!! Now if I could just figure out a way to update the virus definition I should have a kick ass machine.

I can't seem to get it to work. What exactly did you do?

Truthfully... I dont know. I just kept formating the drive after the failed attempts and then BINGO, a perfectly good bootable flash image. How did I know it was a good image? All the other times there where garbled files or the elusive "SETUP" file was never there. Then once I zeroed out the flash drive, formated it to Fat16 and Viola...Euroka it worked. And let me tell you something, when it worked, "IT WORKES"!!! Gota hand it to him he nailed it!

Success, I can confirm this method does indeed work and will restore your OKR button.

To test it out, I cloned my original S10 hard drive to a new hard drive using Image for Windows by TeraByte. I'm sure you can use other cloning software but this is what I used. After the clone, the new hard drive was installed onto the S10. Hit the OKR button and to my expectation, did not work. It just booted into Windows.

I ran the file OKRFIX.EXE which is the file posted by Jwrightmcps in this thread. It created a bootable USB drive. Rebooted the computer and booted from the USB drive which eventually left me at a dos prompt. Entered "setup" and hit the enter button and it went through a few commands. After it was completed, shut down my machine. Hit the OKR button while it was off and voilà, computer turned on and booted into Lenovo's OKR program.

I can say we have finally solved the OKR button or at least found a fix for it. Thanks to Jwrightmcps!

Is there so much need of OKR? I just changed the HDD with a faster/bigger one and don't need it at all. I bought an external DVD-RW for €35 and if I have a problem I recover from the CD. Or, you can create Recovery DVD's from Windows or use another prorgam to make the recoveries. So, I think there is no need to lose so much disk space for a recovery.

Some people wish to have the function available to them if they do not have an external optical drive, or are planning on using the portability of their netbook to use it while travelling... I imagine it adds quite a bit of peace of mind if you know that you can restore a broken machine to its factory settings wherever you are at the press of a button.

I changed my partition ID to 12 which is some kind of compaq restore partition if the list in linux tells me the right thing but this didn't help me. The button still doesn't work. I don't have windows on the machine right now so I cannot try the application. Maybe you can share a little what the application does so that I could try to recreate it on my own without the program?
