LCD Bazel Front & Back Crack Issues

Postby jnoor » Wed Nov 04, 2009 6:29 pm

HI guys,

I wonder if any of you experience this. Yesterday i just found cracks on my lenovo s10 lcd bazel. the front and back. The cracks are located just above the hinge area and on the screw place where the lcd panels are locked. I wonder if this is covered within the waranty as this is not human error at all. Also, the other side of the panel is cracked as well. ANyone can provide me with solutions on how to solve this problem? cos i called LEnovo Technical service and they say that it may not be covered. Help???

Can you prove that it's not human error? Because I'm sure Lenovo could argue that you have just been opening and closing the lid too fast / forcefully / from one corner / by dangling it from the lid and shaking it until it's open. The warranty is meant to cover the function of the device, not the form, for the most part. But if you can prove that it's a defect in material, it might be covered.

Well, yes, i just shown it to the service centre and they already took a photo of it and send it to LENOVO CHINA to check. Hopefully they will provide me with the replacement as they said its very rare for my case to have this thing.

My wife's s10 is having the same problem.
Two cracks along the hinges on either side.

She definitely does not mishandle the laptop so we were surprised to see the cracks.

Any response for warranty coverage of this defect?

I have the same problem, there seems to be a manufacturing defect in some of the products, I approached the service center about this, while it was under warranty. The guy over there said that mine was the third such case at their center, but the lenovo senior officials refused to replace it under warranty (and also the other two unlucky customers, who chose to buy lenovo over others, like me).
I also wrote to them explaining that it was a manufacturing defect, but still they maintained that it was physical damage, and was not covered under warranty.

What seems to be happening in my S10 is that, instead of the hinge taking the full load while the lid is being opened, the part just above the hinge takes the load and bends to some extent while opening the lid. Over time, this has caused the plastic to crack.

The lenovo service center said that they could not get the lid, or even the whole body shell for me, even if I paid for it.

So now I'm using it with a cracked lid (near the hinge) and already some small pieces of the lid have fallen off, and the cracks are moving upwards.
I guess it's just a matter of time before I have to throw away the whole laptop, because, if I'm right, the display interface, webcam and wifi connections also pass through the hinge, and if any of those break, it's as good as junk.

And this has not been the only problem, I had the motherboard replaced once under warranty, since the keys below the touchpad stopped working. And more recently, just after the warranty got over, the charger stopped working, since the wire near the charger pin that goes into the laptop frayed and broke from the inside. I repaired the charger with a little DIY, by cutting open the sheath and connecting the broken wire back again, and covering it with insulation tape.
Though a crude solution, at least it works now, since I would definitely not have spent any money to buy a charger for this poorly built laptop.

All this in just one and a half years of very light use, and absolutely zero physical abuse, including 99% usage indoors. I have carried it along only for maybe 4-5 days, in my bag.
Having had my share of laptops, this was, by far, the worse build quality I have ever seen in my life. Well, I still have a Pentium 2 Dell latitude that still works just fine, after so many years of use. That is what build quality is about.

After this bad experience, I have completely lost faith in Lenovo products and will never buy a Lenovo product ever again, and would advise others to stay away from lenovo too.

It appears as though LENOVO doesn't care about the crack issue.

I bought an S10e IDEA-PAD for my daughter who is studying overseas. She uses the laptop for her daily school work and also a link to keep in touch with the family. My daughter is a careful person and treasures her things. Some time 4 months ago, she found cracks on the left back near the hinge. She did mention it to me and I told her to be careful until she got back and we could take it to the service center. The following month the crack gave way and this has affected the Screen. The Ideapad has been virtually useless since then. She has been without the Ideapad since almost 3 months now. It has caused her some issues at the class and we have ended up making phone calls that cost a lot more than MSN chat. I brought the product as I always used a ThinkPad and been very happy with an IBM. I guess LENOVO can never be an IBM.

I go tomorrow to check if the local service center in the UAE will be of any help. I hope that LENOVO at least is decent enough to accept that this a manufacturing defect and covers the problem. I will continue on this post after my visit and let you know of my experience.
