Firmware Fix for Broken Webcams Now on Support Site

Postby LonnieU » Thu Apr 16, 2009 7:04 pm

Here may be the fix for all those who have had their cameras broke after the Bison Update.

I would very much pay attention to the warning that this update NOT be done to cameras which are already working as repeated below:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description
SYMPTOM:
After installing the Bison Camera Firmware Upgrade, the S10 camera will stop working and display only grey or black background.

AFFECTED CONFIGURATIONS:

Ideapad S10 can be equipped with two different camera sensors. The firmware upgrade available on the website, (version 1404) would damage the existing firmware of one of the cameras and cause the problem described above.

Important Note: This hotfix must ONLY be installed on the machines affected by the symptoms described above. If the camera is working properly, do not install this hotfix. Otherwise, the camera firmware will be destroyed permanently.

A new Firmware upgrade, version 1405, has been released and is available on the website in order to prevent the issue from happening.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A description of the refresh is at this link: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/Hi ... 41904.html

The firmware refresh is here: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/Dr ... _1260.html

I posted this here since most of the camera issues are in this sub-forum.

Good Luck!

I had the symptoms on a S10 I bought off a friend (she had no idea what she had/hadn't installed  so sold it cheap). I figured I can live without a webcam, but I thought it would be nice to fix it.

I ran this fix and it still has the same problem. When access the camera it comes up with a blank grey screen and does not change. Has anyone else had problems with this fix not helping? Or any ideas of what to try?

Did she ever turn on the cam when she recieved it?
The webcam doesn't come turned on, so you have to press FN + Esc to turn it on.
Try that. Hope that helps.

I might have the holy grail of solutions for everyone...
background.....
1. i had a perfectly working camera.
2. ran bison camera update tool.... still worked..
3. stupidly updated with the new bison camera FW refresh toll... Stuffed everything... Gray screen all the time..
Here's the fix....

just revert back to this original firmware driver tool (camera.exe)... Thats it. if you have already tried the two updates again you will realise that the first one will say that theres no need to update as its already current, and the other refresh one does nothing either... with this ORIGINAL FW tool they had ages ago, it will restore it back to normal without questioning what is current....

Give it a try, i found you can cycle through the FW's now and see which one works for you...
1. camera.exe (attached below) in the RAR file
2. bison camera update tool... http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/Dr ... _1259.html
3. bison camera FW refresh tool... http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/Dr ... _1260.html

Make sure you reboot after you update....
I dont take any responsibility if if it doesnt work, but with your camera already stuffed i guess it cant get any worse.

Cheers

I dont know if my friend turned it on or not before updating, but that was the first thing I did to text it when I first revieved the maching. Pity it wasn't that simple :(

Thanks asa51n! Tried this and the camera now works with no problems. Good to see after much fussing around with the updates from Lenovo. Thanks for providing a copy of the original file.

That's unusual. Try to download it again and see what happens. I hadn't heard of this problem before.
