"failed to get partition information" on my brand new S10

Postby billcheng » Thu Jan 15, 2009 7:59 pm

I just got a brand new Lenovo Ideapad S10. I wanted to make a backup of my system before I start to use it heavily. I started the OneKey Recovery and clicked on Back Up. The default selection is Full Backup with Quick Compression. I clicked on Next and I got a popup box that says "Failed to get partition information".

This machine has a 30GB drive C, a 30GB drive D, and a 14 GB hidden drive E. I have not done anything to the drive to modified the partitions. Under System Properties, it says that I have Windows XP SP3 and it is manufactured and supported by "Lenovo (Beijing) Limited".

Has anyone else seen the same problem? Is there anyway to get around this?

that is out of my purview... personally that sounds like something either you'll be on your own with or you can call lenovo support (this is what warranties are for) and get them to fix it. By what others say they are very fast on warranty work... You should make that decision and then if you decide to go it yourself, post here saying so. This is just advice, by the way, not instructions. :)

Thanks for the advise. That's what I thought it would be since I cannot find anything on the Internet regarding this problem. I'll give them a call once I find out how to contact them (I left warranty information at my office).

I've called Lenovo tech support. It appeared that this is the first time they have heard of this problem. The only real fix for this problem is to mail my S10 to them so they can have a look at it. :-(

Can you view your partitions through any type of drive management? I am shooting in the dark here, but try converting your fat32 C drive into NTFS. It might *kick* it into gear or something. It is a very easy and straight forward option to do through Windows. In lieu of that a drive or partition manager should be able to show if there are problems. Lets of freeware downloands from here---> http://www.techsupportalert.com/ <----

My C drive is FAT32 and D and hidden E drives are NTFS. I'll give it a try to convert it to NTFS. I guess that may explain why I'm the only one with the problem with a brand new S10! Somehow, my C drive was formatted with the wrong format! I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :-) I'll post the result back here. (This may take a few days to get this going.)

Lenovo formatted most in not all c: drives with fat32. Apparently it had something to do with the default image of the OKR. On a side note One Key has always seemed to have incremental problems on most' systems. I converted to NTFS for the simple fact that it handles larger files, which is usually a necessity when dealing with image files and the like. Anyhow hope you get it working.

This is just for info, i think there's a problem with the OKR and the recovery software for all s10 or s10e. According to Lenovo this drive partitioning is a new way of ditching the recovery disc that they provide to their laptops to lessen their responsibility on warranty and tech support. As for the HD partition i advice all s10 & s10e owners to refrain from messing around with the partitions until Lenovo comes up with a solution to this problem. If you attempt to repartition your HDD the OKR will lose its functionality.

On my s10e 160GB HDD 2.5gb D:\SERVICE002 hidden fat32 for its recovery files, the rest is C: formated as NTFS. If you want to know the partitions for your HDD the best way to do this is through windows administrative tools-disk management.

Now here's a tip for you s10 & s10e users, i suggest you reformat your HDD and repartition it to your liking and reinstall all the drivers by downloading it from Lenovo website. after installing everything, install OKR software also from Lenovo site and recreate your your backup image files that way it will be a more smaller backup, coz the factory backup of s10 & s10e includes all the trial softwares will bloats the factory image files. but before doing so first backup the factory image files from your recovery drive and store it in a safe place incase you might need it in the future.

Anyways if your really upto tinkering with your newfound gadget then go for it. but if you think you'd rather stick to the factory settings of Lenovo then i'd rather you maintain whatever comes with it & don't use any third party utility software that might interfere with the recovery files.

Enjoy your new s10 & s10e. :)

P.S. upgrade your memory to get the best satisfaction for your s10 & s10e.
