A few quick questions! :)

Postby mewshi » Thu Aug 06, 2009 5:29 pm

Hi, guys! I just have a few quick questions about Windows 7 Installation on the S10 :)

First off, can I install it in the space of 10GB plus the OKR partition?

Second, can I install it from a flash drive?

Third, if I install it over linux, will it put the new bootloader on?

Thanks! :)

First, it will fit in a 10gb partition, but are you talking about ON the OKR partition? That won't work. Rule of thumb: If you change any partitions or touch the OKR partition, it won't work anymore. A lot of us removed the recovery partition the day we got our S10, though, so it's up to you.

Second, yes, you can. These directions worked for me.

Third, yes, it will install its own bootloader, but you can always go back and reinstall GRUB. There are lots of guides on how to get 7 working with GRUB out there.

And I can have XP and 7 running dual-boot, right?

Also, how's the performance? And can I shut off the eye candy if I don't want it?

And how's the driver support? XD

Yes, dual booting is no problem, and should work out automatically if you install 7 after XP. Drivers have never been a problem for me, I just choose the Vista option if I need something that wasn't preloaded with 7. You can downgrade or change any visual settings.

Ok, so, if I install windows 7 RC, then it'll fix the MBR stuff *before* I reboot, right? Because I'm deleting linux, and if I get rid of grub.conf and still need it, I'm... quite boned.

It will take care of everything AFAIK. When 7 installs, it will set its own partition active, write its bootloader to the MBR, and create a boot menu including XP. Since 7 maps drive letters regardless of when it is installed, it's best to install XP first (so it has a C drive correctly labeled for system files) and then 7 (because it will make the D drive say its a C drive within 7, and it all just works out). No GRUB needed. If there are any boot issues, just make sure the 7 partition is set with the active/boot flag, then run the 7 installer again and use the Recovery Environment to auto-detect the issues. They'll be fixed automatically.
