Can't boot from USB stick

Postby Griek » Sat Feb 20, 2010 6:43 am

Hello,

I'm trying to boot my S10 from a USB stick, but whatever I do, I keep getting the message: "Disk error. Press any key to restart the computer".
In the BIOS I have set USB HDD on position 1. (using FN + F11 at start up). I noticed, there are two more options with USB in that list: USB key and something else. Do I have to put another USB option on the top of the list in order to get it started?

Thank you!

That sounds like a problem with the USB key, the BIOS is correctly trying to boot from it, but the relevant media is not present. What are you trying to boot?

I was trying to boot a Windows 7 .iso file, size 1.4GB.
What are the proper steps for this, anyway? Do I have to change the boot settings when I start up? I'm having a hard time finding out how to boot from usb stick on a Lenovo.

Thanks for your time

The .iso file is an image of an optical storage device and as such cannot be read as a file by most BIOSes. You can do two things:

  1. Use a partitioning tool to make the USB key "bootable", mount the .iso file as though you had inserted it as a CD and copy all the files over to your USB key (I have never been able to get this method to work)
  2. Use the Microsoft tool designed just for this job: [ur]lhttp://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool[/url]

I have successfully used method 2. to install Windows 7 to my S10e. Give it a go and post back if you come across any other problems or need some advice on a particular step.
