Need help with clone to new HD

Postby rr0123 » Mon Sep 26, 2011 12:51 pm

Hi, I have a fully functioning OSX install on my S10. I want to change the hard drive, and so I tried both SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the existing hard drive to the new one, by attaching the new HD via usb enclosure. But the new HD won't boot. The computer sees the HD just fine, it shows up in the bios. When I start up, I just get a flashing cursor. I also tried booting up via an external usb thumb drive that has an OSX install (for a Dell D430, not S10 unfortunately). I can do that, and it lets me choose the install, or the HD that I cloned. I choose the HD, and then one of two things happens. It either just hangs on the splash screen indefinitely, or sometimes it eventually goes to another screen that says I have to restart.

Any tips on getting the new HD to boot? I searched and found the thread below, but I have already tried SuperDuper and CC Cloner. Thanks!

I got it to work, though not sure why it worked. Neither Super Duper nor CC Clone would give me a bootable drive. I then moved to Clonezilla. Got a failure with a recent version, but then tried an older version and for some reason that worked. Makes no sense to me, but at least I now have a cloned drive.
