Are you running the Mac OS? Or Windows? The process is similar, but the difference is in Mac OS you have to do some preference tweaking to get it to work right.

This user asked about installing not configuring, so I hooked on that. I didn't even consider the user might be asking for more, oops.

hi,
I use OS X

my VGA monitor (22" form LG) does not work on my IdeaPad. When I plug in my monitor it shows only strange things :(
Any ideas?
What can I do to get this working?

You need to disable display mirroring. With the kexts we have for our graphics, the external display (when mirroring) acts weird.

Mine seems to automatically go to display mirroring when I plug my monitor in and I can't see anything on either screen. Is there a hotkey I can press to disable it while the external monitor is plugged in? :?

Rebooting may help. Barring that, you may be4 able to just tap Fn+F3 to switch between internal+external, external only, and internal only modes. that is a laptop hardware switch AFAIK and is somewhat independant of the OS to totally independant depending on which os and which video driver is used.
