HowTo: Bluetooth module installation

Postby ravic » Sat Nov 01, 2008 10:03 am

I just recieved the bluetooth module from hellowifi and installed it in my s10.

Here are the instructions (I performed this on my s10 with vista home premium, but the process is the same for XP)

1. Remove the battery from S10
2. Flip the laptop over and place it on its back on a soft surface that top surface does not get scrathed
3. Remove the four screws at the bottom (See picture)

4. Flip the laptop over to normal orientation and open it.
5. Now try to press the edges of the palmrest area to release the two notches and the top left and top right corners of the plam rest areas. There are two notches and once you release one the other should be easy. Work slowly and try not to break these notches. There is some flex to them, so i think you will be ok as long as you dont pull too hard.

6. Now lift the palm rest open, but do not pull it too far, There are two cable connecting this to the mainboard, you want to leave them connected.
7. Once open, you will notice the bluetooth cable socket on the bottom right corner and there should also be a place to install the module.
8. The cable that comes with the module has the same type of connectors on both end but they are wired differently. So you should pay attention to which connector goes to the mainboard.
9. My cable from hellowifi came with a black tag at one end and that is the end that should be plugged into the motherboard.

10. Once you connect the other end module you can place it the area where the module goes.
11. I used some double sided tape to hold the module in place, but you can also use a small scree if you have one handy (unlikely)
12. Now put the plam rest cover back on and press on the two top corners to latch it in place.
13. Now flip the laptop over and install the 4 screws
14. Now install the battery and power it up.
15. Your OS will detect the module and ask for driver, press cancel or any other prompt that lets you skip the step.
16. Download the bluetooth driver from lenovo's support site or You can also install Bluesoleil instead.

17. Make sure your wireless button is enabled state.
18. Install the software and follow onscreen instructions.
19. Module should now be enabled and the LED indicator in the front should turn purple and the system tray should show a bluetooth icon.
20. Restart the laptop to enable all the functionality.
21. Once restarted, login to the system.
22. Right click on the bluetooth icon in the system tray and click "Start using bluetooth" (This is on vista, please confirm if you have to do this on XP)
23. It will install several bluetooth services as shown in the picture below and yes, Stereo Audio (A2DP) is one of them.

Wireless button does seem to disable/enable both bluetooth and wifi. I wonder if there is a way to select which ones to disable.

Posting this while connected via bluetooth to my EVDO Phone.

Seems like the lenovo software installs a broadcom control panel applet. You do have the option of using Microsoft version, but have not tried it yet.

Fn + F5 also seem to behave the same way as the button. Is there a config somewhere i can change? I am running this in Vista, which could be working differently.

Do you have the numbers on the bluetooth module you installed? I wonder if my module will be compatible with Lenovo's drivers. If it isn't, I will buy both the cable and BT module from Hellowifi.

Systemjinx,

The module is generic with no numbers on it. The pcb itself says it is a bcm92045nmd.

Lenovo driver package does not seem to check to see if it is a lenovo module. It is a generic broadcom software package.
I think it will work with any bcm92045 module.

What's is displayed in XP is this (from an earlier post):

S10-2045.jpg

On a ThinkPad, FN + F5 causes a pop-up window that looks very close to this to appear. You can then click on the on/off buttons and select the Bluetooth & Wireless seperately or all together. Does Vista do the pop-up window or just toggle the power on FN + F5?

This pop-up utility probably does not get loaded from the Bluetooth install. It doesn't in a Thinkpad. Comes from the install of the "general" ThinkPad utilities. Might would be able to shed extra light but I'm in the queue again - 11/15/08

Glad everyone kept focus on finding a solution for internal Bluetooth!

I do not have that utility in my fresh vista install.

So, it looks like you can change it in XP easily.

I will try to see which utility installs this applet and see if i can get a Vista version of it.
